Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Straight from Wikipedia,
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (Portuguese: jiu-jitsu brasileiro, often abbreviated to BJJ, is a self-defense system, martial art, and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. It is primarily a ground-based fighting style and focuses on taking one’s opponent down to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks, chokeholds, or compression locks. It has its roots in traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu.

With the rise of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) BJJ practitioners soon learned that the Gi (traditional uniform) was taking the fights into an unrealistic tug of war for grips, and could be used against them.
Modern MMA has raised the profile of grappling to be an essential tool kit required for any fight. It has also become a rising self defence form of martial art. Unlike striking arts when practised can’t be done at 100%, as that would be a match/fight. BJJ utilises the tap system, so by getting your opponent to submit ends the match. This means that injuries and long term damage is reduced to minimal levels. Allowing you to train up to 100% and get real world applicable fight IQ. It’s also great fun, you can roll (spar) for a long time, always finding yourself in new positions with new problems to solve.

“My description of Jiu Jitsu is high-level problem solving with dire physical consequences.”
